The Parable of the Lost Horse (often called the “Maybe” story) is a well-known Taoist story attributed to the wisdom tradition of Lao Tzu and Zhuangzi. A farmer in a village had only one horse. One day, the horse ran away into the hills. The neighbors came and said, “Such bad luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe.” A few days later, the horse returned — bringing several wild horses with it. The neighbors said, “Such good luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe.” Later, the farmer’s son tried to ride one of the wild horses. He fell and broke his leg. The neighbors said, “Such bad luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe.” Soon after, soldiers came to the village to recruit young men for war. Because the son’s leg was broken, he was not taken. What I got — fullness. What comes — welcome. What goes — return. Joy, without holding. Peace, without asking. Peace, without losing. It feels cyclical. Nothing grasped. Nothing resisted. Nothing truly lost. Fullness in receiving. Grace in letting go. Trust in return.
